Democrat Scott Martinez, the lawyer who played an enormous role in his party's recent victories on new political boundaries, is leaving private practice to work for Denver Mayor Michael Hancock.

Martinez begins Jan. 9 as deputy city attorney.

"I'm no stranger to the high stakes at the intersection of law and politics, and I'm excited to bring that experience to achieve the mayor's vision for the city," Martinez said. "He's going to do big things, and I'm excited to play a role in his administration."

Democrat Scott Martinez, the attorney who played an enormous role in his party's victories in redrawing congressional and legislative boundaries, is leaving private practice to work for Denver Mayor Michael Hancock.

Denver Mayor Michael Hancock on Thursday appointed Scott Martinez as deputy city attorney.

Martinez, who begins his job Jan. 9, will assist in overseeing the 88 attorneys and 91 staff members within the city attorney's office.

As an attorney at Denver-based Holland & Hart since 2006, Martinez' practice areas included government investigations, commercial litigation and data security. He recently was recognized for his work in crafting the boundaries for Colorado's congressional and legislative districts.
