Success from the session: Lawmakers, Ritter help workers stay on path toward opportunity

Finding and keeping a job with good pay and benefits is the surest path to opportunity for most Coloradans, and in the recently completed session, legislators passed three bills to help workers get and stay on this path.

These bills, signed recently by Gov. Bill Ritter, minimize the effects of unemployment, establish a permanent commission to study pay equity, and ensure low-wage workers receive a tax credit when there are TABOR rebates. The Bell supported all of the measures.

A Tribune columnist has posed the question: Would you share your hours with co-workers to avoid layoffs?

The question is relevant because Gov. Bill Ritter recently signed into law a work-share bill. Probably because the law is brand-new to Colorado, questions have been raised. We'd like to provide some answers.

Work-share is a voluntary program that companies can use to weather short-term business declines.

This bill represents a net opportunity gain for Colorado. Allowing employers to provide work-share opportunities will keep more Colorado workers employed during periods of economic downturn.
