Amendment 60

Describing Proposition 101 and Amendments 60 and 61 as the "bad three," Scott Gorginsky, senior policy director for Colorado Children's Campaign spoke during an open forum at Salida Middle School Thursday.

"These proposals are deceptive," he said. "Proponents say they are good for jobs and people, but they will strangle jobs and businesses.

"These are three deceptive ballot initiatives that promise tax relief by crippling future economy in Colorado and harming our children's future."

An analysis of Proposition 101 by the Bell Policy Center, shows sharp impacts on Denver Public Schools. Further analysis by the Cherry Creek News suggests budget cuts equivalent to 340 teachers from the measure.

The measure, part of a trio of tax-slashing ballot items that include numbers 60 and 61, targets state income taxes and vehicle ownership fees.

Colorado voters may be angry, but they aren't crazy.

On Tuesday, Coloradans loudly rejected one vision for our future – the vision of an ineffectual public sector starved for resources peddled by Douglas Bruce and other proponents of Amendments 60 and 61 and Proposition 101.

Moffat County resident Rick Barnes contends government is expanding dramatically in size and scope, and is close to controlling "everything."

"They run our lives now, to the point where we have no control over what we do," he said.

For that reason, Barnes is supporting Amendments 60 and 61, and Proposition 101 –  three measures he said would limit government control and spending.

The Bell Policy Center, Colorado Children's Campaign and Colorado Fiscal Policy Institute have examined the impacts of Amendments 60 and 61 and Proposition 101 on local school district funding. The combined impact of these three ballot issues on the Platte Canyon School District would be a loss of $1,929,529, according to these groups. The local funding loss per pupil would be 46.22 percent or $1,581.71 per student.

A trio of ballot measures has so frightened and upset educators that they have stepped away from their white boards and into the gritty political arena to try to defeat them.

It's a rare concerted effort by academia.

"It would have a horrific effect on schools and government services. The state would come to a standstill," said Brad Stauffer, spokesman for Colorado Association of School Boards, which represents 174 districts.

EDWARDS, Colorado – Singletree resident Richard Gretz got a mailer from the proponents of Amendments 60, 61 and Proposition 101 and said the information is misleading after learning what proponents are failing to tell voters.

Gretz was one of about 35 people who attended a nonpartisan Colorado ballot initiatives educational event Friday at the Singletree Community Center, sponsored by The Women's Foundation of Colorado.
