Bell backs wider coverage in Family Medical Leave Act
Public interest fellow Kathleen Hallgren testified on Thursday in favor of House Bill 13-1222, the Family Care Act, which would expand the group of family members for whom employees may take FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) leave to provide care. The expanded group would include relationships such as an employee's parent, child, grandparent, grandchild, sibling, spouse or partner in a civil union, among others.
Hallgren told the House Health, Insurance and Environment Committee that "the Family Care Act will provide critical support to the structure of [the FMLA], and in doing so provide critical support to Colorado workers balancing the demands of work and family ... This bill will modernize the definition of ‘family' to more closely reflect a diverse array of family structures and caregiver relationships, making Colorado friendlier to its families, its workers and its businesses."
The bill passed onto the Committee of the Whole on a vote of 6-5.
